Last summer term was a challenging one with school life affected nationally by COVID-19. At The Great Schools Trust (GST) the ongoing restrictions made it difficult to offer the students their usual end of year residential which forms an important part of the King’s Leadership Academy experience.
However, the Personal Development team at GST were determined to find a way to deliver the rich and varied outdoor education provision that is so characteristic of the Trust. At King’s Leadership Academy Warrington and King’s Leadership Academy Liverpool the team designed an ‘onsite’ leadership day for Year 7 which proved to be a great success.
Character and leadership development are an important part of the King’s Leadership Academy curriculum and students carried out activities designed to progress their leadership and team building skills. Students enjoyed building shelters, developing their orienteering, STEM and MTA skills and using VR headsets to simulate high ropes. The aim of the day was to link leadership theory to practical demonstration of leadership skills and to build confidence and self-belief.
The adaptation of the classic GST residential into a COVID-safe, onsite provision was a fantastic way to ensure none of the students missed out on this important aspect of the King’s experience but the team are looking forward to getting back to off-site residentials at the Conway and Brathay Centres in the near future.
